SEEFELD, Austria — What a weekend it was in Seefeld, the site of the first-ever Nordic Combined World Cup Triple, with Germany’s Eric Frenzel winning every competition and bringing home the big bucks: €30,000 Euros (almost $40,600 dollars). While Frenzel stole the show with his sweeping performances on back-to-back-to-back days, Bryan Fletcher of the U.S. notched a season-best fifth overall on Sunday.
“Personal-best result this season,” Fletcher says to the camera with a smile.
“It was a good format, it was a lot of fun, it was interesting,” he explained. “We’re excited to go into Sochi next.”
The second American who made Friday’s top 50 to qualify for Saturday’s and Sunday’s competition, Billy Demong ended up 11th.
“The weekend was pretty good overall, a couple of good jumps, a couple of OK jumps, but on a good level and racing was really good,” Demong says. “Finished on a high note with the 15 k back in my territory with a little longer races and was able to ski the third-fastest time and pass a bunch of guys to finish 11th.”
The U.S. Nordic Combined Team is headed back to Park City, Utah, for an altitude-intensity block before the Olympics in Sochi, Russia, Feb. 7-23.
“We’re gonna go home now and do some high-speed intervals, little bit harder than normal and try to start exuding a little bit of a peak here,” Demong explains. “We’ve got some icing on the cake for the big show over in Russia.”
